Tom Basden crowned if.comedy's Best Newcomer 2007
It’s all over… as the dust settles on Fringe 2007, the trophy room at Underbelly is full to bursting! Okay, so we don’t have a trophy room but if we did you wouldn’t be able to move.
The cream of the comedy crop gathered for the illustrious if.comedy awards last night, where our very own Tom Basden was crowned Best Newcomer of 2007. It’s really not surprising, with his sell-out Underbelly show ‘Tom Basden Won’t Say Anything’ receiving rave reviews:
"Only a few skilled comics can successfully marry music with comedy; Tom Basden is the latest to join their ranks" Independent
"A genuine treat" The List
‘Tom Basden Won’t Say Anything’ will probably be your only chance to see a stand-up who doesn’t talk. Instead, Tom cleverly takes you on a riotous rollercoaster of doodle drawing, filmic snippets and song, including our favourites: ‘The girl with the glass eye’ and ‘Is it Zara Phillips or is it the horse’.
We raise our pints to Tom Basden for his well-deserved recognition and look forward to seeing what delicious ditties he’ll feed us in 2008. (26 August 2007)
Another show for 1927's Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Following 1927's clutch of five awards for Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, which won the Carol Tambor Award today, and with tickets flying out of Underbelly, we have put on an extra show on Sunday 26th at quarter past midnight (12.15am Monday 27th August). So if you haven't seen this multi-award winning show, you'd better snap up those new tickets pretty smart-ish! (24 August 2007)
Another Fringe First, the Carol Tambor and the Amnesty Winner
Well, the results from the awards ceremonies keep rolling in and Underbelly shows continue to pick up more than their fair share of the awards going.
The undisputed success of 2007 has to be Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (1927) who have now picked up five awards: adding a Total Theatre Award (Best Emerging Company), the Carol Tambor Award and the Arches Brick Award to their Fringe First and Herald Angel Awards . Our congratulations go to 1927 for a fantastic debut on the Edinburgh Fringe!
Following close behind is The Container (Nimblefish) which has just won the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award to add to the Fringe First, they have already received. Nimblefish have also been nominated for the Best Ensemble at the Stage Awards. The winner has yet to be announced.
Wish I Had a Sylvia Plath (Strophium) has won a Fringe First Award to add to its nomination for Best Solo Performer at the Total Theatre Awards.
Tom Basden has been nominated for the Best Newcomer Award at the if.comedy Awards. The winner will be announced tonight at the annual star-studded awards ceremony, where this year Christian Slater will join 2006 Winner Phil Nichol in handing out the prizes.
Finally, but not least we would like to congratulate Sexy Boys and Girls & Co. for their Special Commendation for music and lyrics and their nomination for Best Musical Production received for Debbie Does Dalls - The Musical! at the MTM:UK Musical Theatre Awards.
Phew!! I think that is us done for now. With a few awards ceremonies still to go, we will let you know if there are any more! (24 August 2007)
Week 1 and 2 winners of fringe awards
Weeks 1 and 2 have already turned up FIVE awards presented to Underbelly shows.
Congratulations to our Fringe First Winners, theatre company 1927 (Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea) & Nimblefish (The Container). Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea has also won a Herald Angel, along with the angelic (?!) Hamell on Trial. Bridget Christie has won the first Funny Women Fringe Award for her show The Court Of King Charles II.
We are hoping that week 3, with its many more awards, will add to Underbelly's metaphorical silverware cabinet! (22 August 2007)
