Underbelly, Cowgate
The Smirnoff Underbelly is our original venue on Cowgate where Underbelly has been located since it was founded in 2000. Therefore we will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary in 2009. Yay! It has seven performance spaces (ranging in size from 50 to 185 seats) and four bars, one of which is inside the Belly Dancer performance space and another in an outside courtyard where smoking is allowed. In 2008 we also introduce the Cow Cafe with real coffee and late night free entertainment.
Underbelly is also the home for our press office and production office for all our venues.
How to get there
The venue is number 61. The main entrance is on Cowgate underneath George IV Bridge, but there is also be an entrance on Victoria Street.
Underbelly's Baby Belly, Niddry St South
Baby Belly is Underbelly's second venue in the Caves off Cowgate on Niddry Street and just down the road from our original Underbelly venue. With 3 spaces between 60 and 150 seats and a relaxed bar with excellent food available prior to performances. Venue number is 88.
E4 Udderbellys' Pasture
In 2006 Underbelly livened up the Old Town when Bristo Square became the home of E4 Udderbellys' Pasture. It has now become an Edinburgh focal point and the new hub of the Fringe, full to overflowing with kitsch colours, vibrant crowds, fibre glass cows and a buzzing al fresco bar. The centre piece of the Pasture is the impossible to miss E4 Udderbelly, a giant upside down purple cow that seats 400, quickly named "The best new venue of the year" in 2006 by The Sunday Times and been the best grazzing in Edinburgh ever since.
Additional to the Udderbelly, nearby in the Pasture is the splendid Cow Barn with 300 seats. In 2007, McEwan Hall was opened up to host the Glastonbury hit, Silent Disco and moved into Appleton Tower in 2008 along with the 5 Star sell-out theatre show Office Party. We have also had site-specific shows in the Bristo Square area in a shipping container, a porta-loo (the "Porta-Moo"!), and the back of a truck. E4 Udderbellys' Pasture Venue number is 300.
