As a General Technicians you will look after our smaller venues at the Edinburgh Fringe. Our Technical team are the backbone of venues, setting up and operating all the equipment for our performance spaces, looking after all of our visiting performers and companies, and keeping the place running.
As part of a largest arts festival in the world, you’ll be working with a range of world-class companies; we have a huge variety of shows made up of music, comedy, drama, burlesque, and circus acts. The Underbelly crew work hard to create fantastic venues and festival sites in Edinburgh, throughout the UK, and across the world. The Fringe Festival is the centrepiece of our year, and as a part of our Technical staff you will be a vital component towards making it a success.
As often the sole technical staff member of a venue at any one time under the leadership of a Technical Manager, duties include:
- Programming the lighting board and QLab for the shows
- Assisting companies with turnarounds between shows
- Maintaining the sound and lighting equipment
- Working with Front of House to keep the venue running to time
- Keeping the venue in good and tidy order
- Operating the sound and lights for the shows as needed
In general, you are in charge and responsible for the technical side of the venue.
Previous experience in other festival venue roles is a great advantage.
Given that the role is part of a close-knit venue team of Technical and Front of House staff working hard throughout the festival we are looking for positive and friendly candidates who will support and get involved in whatever tasks are required to help the overall team.
A venue days is split in to two shifts, keeping a technician’s working hours to a reasonable length averaging at 8-9 hours a day throughout the run.
PAY AND BENEFITS
Successful candidates will benefit from:
- competitive pay at National Living Wage level for entry level positions scaled upwards for more experienced candidates where hourly rate will be based on experience and everyday responsibilities
- guaranteed pay of minimum of 32 hours per week based on a 6 day-week (pro-rated for people working fewer days)
- paid breaks
- agreed day off every week.
Your staff pass gives you the opportunity to see any show at all Underbelly venues throughout the Fringe (depending on availability). Accommodation is not provided as part of the position; however, we can advise on where to find affordable accommodation, and also help match up with other technicians working with us to help find places. You should ideally be available for the entirety of August.
Interviews will take place from the 30th of March in London and Edinburgh.
