About Underbelly Productions
Founded in 2000 by directors Ed Bartlam and Charlie Wood to operate one venue at the Edinburgh Festival, Underbelly has grown to include the Underbelly Festivals in London and Hong Kong, Edinburgh's Christmas and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay on behalf of Edinburgh Council, Christmas in Leicester Square, and West End Live in Trafalgar Square on behalf of Westminster City Council and the Society of London Theatre
Our annual programme at the Edinburgh Fringe encompasses world-class comedy, cabaret, circus and theatre with almost 200 shows across 21 venues, making Underbelly one of the largest promoters at the Festival.
Underbelly Productions is the theatrical arm of Underbelly, presenting, producing and promoting a diverse programme of international work.
In 2017, in association with Cameron Mackintosh, we produced a major revival of the classic musical Five Guys Named Moe, which ran for 30 weeks at the purpose built Marble Arch Theatre. This scorching production garnered rave reviews and was nominated for 3 WhatsOnStage Awards (including Best Musical Revival) and as Best Entertainment and Family at the 2018 Olivier Awards. In 2017 we were also Associate Producers on the UK Premiere of the musical Big Fish starring Kelsey Grammar, which enjoyed a sold-out Christmas run at The Other Palace. Don’t Tell Me Not to Fly, a one-woman cabaret featuring a revolving cast of some of the West End’s favourite leading ladies will premiere in McEwan Hall as part of the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Other recent highlights of Underbelly Productions work include acclaimed improv group Austentatious in the West End; Frankie Vah by Luke Wright on tour; late night comedy/circus sensation Elixir; Closer by Circa, commissioned especially for the iconic Udderbelly venue; Abandoman’s Moonrock Boombox, The Hot Desk and Life + Rhymes; Barely Methodical Troupe’s Bromance; Adelaide-Award winning Cut, for 2 Edinburgh seasons and London transfer at The Vaults; and the internationally acclaimed, world-wide smash hit Limbo, co-created with London’s Southbank Centre and Australia’s Strut and Fret.
Other past work includes circus spectaculars Cantina, Barbu and Scotch and Soda, Frisky & Mannish, Hot Dub Time Machine, Flawless, Joan Rivers, The Magnets, Michael Winslow, A Simple Space and Circa’s Wunderkammer and Beyond. In 2017, Underbelly sold over 1.3 million tickets to our various events.
We are always looking for the next brilliant show for touring and for our Festivals. We love hearing about new ideas, and we're particularly interested in non-language, circus, music and family shows. If you're interested in working with us please get in touch.
